Marcy and I have snubbed the now mainstream NASCAR-namely Sprint Cup, Nationwide, and Craftsman Truck Series-until the Crown Royal 400 at Richmond International Raceway. We ironically watched the race with John and Jen (and Anna, Alex, and Cole) in Charlottesville. Throughout the course of the race, many "truths" became "self-evident." I use the term "self-evident" since they have a framed print of "Declaration of Independence" by John Trumbull hanging over their mantle. John is a NASCAR fan-a closet NASCAR fan-and his driver is 88, Dale Earhardt, Jr. And he succeeded in converting Marcy. He is, after all, a lawyer. Now she's obsessed. Dale this and Junior that. The most satisfying moment was the disappointment that washed over John and Marcy as Kyle Busch turned "June Bug" with 3 laps to go. And Busch, in that very moment, became persona non grata to Dale Earnhardt, Jr. fans and my new NASCAR hero.
In the interest of full disclosure and to be charitable to John, he was born and raised in Daytona Beach, Florida.
